The Community Service Society is shocked and sad to learn of Jackie Berrien’s passing. Jackie was an inspirational leader, a colleague and a friend. CSS was fortunate to have worked with her both when she served as Associate Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and most recently as Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Jackie’s accomplishments in the voting rights arena and in combating employment discrimination – particularly as experienced by individuals with criminal conviction histories – created lasting change that affects New York City and the nation. Her forceful, insightful, kind and gentle presence will be greatly missed. CSS extends its condolences to her family, particularly her husband and our colleague and friend, Peter Williams.
For more than 170 years, the Community Service Society of New York has been the leading voice on behalf of low-income New Yorkers and continues to advocate for the economic security of the working poor in the nation’s largest city. We respond to urgent, contemporary challenges with applied research, advocacy, litigation, and innovative program models that help the working poor achieve a better quality of life and promote a more prosperous city.
