Statement on Lilliam Barrios-Paoli Appointed Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services

David R. Jones

Today, mayor-elect Bill de Blasio selected a committed public servant, scholar, and respected community leader with a unique perspective on the needs of urban residents as his Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services.  Over her illustrious career, Dr. Lilliam Barrios-Paoli has served as commissioner of several city agencies, including the Human Resources Administration, Housing Preservation and Development, the Department of Employment, and the Department of Personnel.  Most recently, she led the Department of Aging in the Bloomberg Administration.  In addition to her impeccable credentials in city government, Dr. Barrios-Paoli has also been a leader in the nonprofit sector.  She is the former president and CEO of Safe Space NYC, Inc., which provides counseling to thousands of at-risk children and families in the Bronx and Queens.  She has also held leadership positions with the United Way of New York City, the New York City Partnership, Health and Hospital Corporation, and Literacy Volunteers of NYC.  Dr. Barrios-Paoli will oversee city agencies responsible for health care, the homeless, and children and family services – critical safety nets for New Yorkers living in poverty. Drawing on her vast knowledge base and relationship with the nonprofit community, Dr. Barrios-Paoli will be a key player in the implementation of policy changes and initiatives that make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable residents.  She is a tremendous addition to the de Blasio administration.
